Mercedes' SUV models all start with the letter G, from GLA to GLS, only the G-Class stands alone with a pure letter as the series name.

G stands for Geländewagen, the German word for off-road vehicle, so when we say Mercedes G, it's literally translated as "off-road vehicle," which is a simple and straightforward naming method.

### 45 Years of History, Legendary Without Major Changes

Every time a new Mercedes G-Class product is released, people notice that this generation of the G-Class, like the previous one, looks very similar. They both have a square boxy shape, round headlights, tough and strong, simple, with as simple lines as possible, seemingly resisting the changing era.

There's no need to blame yourself for not noticing the subtle changes because the Mercedes G-Class has that trait. Perhaps in the automotive industry, and even in the SUV or off-road vehicle sector, there are design trends, but the Mercedes G-Class, because of its legendary positioning, doesn't care about them, at least from an external perspective.

The new Mercedes G500 is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six twin-turbocharged engine, providing 330 kW and 560 Nm of power. This M256 engine has more power and torque, and the new G-Class is slightly electrified, with a 48-volt ISG intelligent electric motor system providing an additional 15 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. The new Mercedes G500 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, an improvement of 0.5 seconds compared to the previous generation.

Another significant change is that the front grille now has four bars instead of three, and there are dual touchscreens in the rear, with the new Mercedes G500 starting at 1.868 million yuan.

As for the Mercedes AMG G63, it features an AMG 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine, delivering 430 kW and 850 Nm of thunderous power. The engine also features cylinder deactivation under partial load conditions to further improve efficiency, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.4 seconds, slightly faster than the previous generation due to the mild hybrid system. The starting price of the new Mercedes AMG G63 is 2,595,500 yuan.

Since the first generation of the Mercedes G-Class was born in 1979, over the past 45 years, its changes have been subtle.

By the way, this legendary model was originally called G-Wagen when it was born, short for Geländewagen. In the 45-year history, the Mercedes G-Class has only had four upgrade models, namely W460, W461, W463, and the latest W464.

When looking at the 1979 G-Wagen and the latest G-Class from 2024 side by side, the changes aren't as significant as one might imagine. The reason for this simplicity is actually quite simple.

The G-Wagen was born simple, designed and produced to meet the needs of the Iranian military, when in the 1970s, the Iranian King wanted to equip his troops with a high-performance light off-road vehicle, so he commissioned Mercedes to build this vehicle. Thus, in 1979, the first G-Wagen rolled off the assembly line at the Graz factory in Austria.

The first generation of the G-Wagen offered two models with different wheelbases. The short-wheelbase model had a wheelbase of 2400mm and offered a two-door convertible version and a two-door hardtop version, while the long-wheelbase model with a wheelbase of 2850mm offered a four-door hardtop version. To meet military requirements, both models had the option of a rear window plug.

At that time, both the exterior and interior design of the G-Wagen were very simple, with straight lines and minimal changes continuing to this day. The interior configuration was also minimal due to its military application, with few comfort features.

Later on, when Iran underwent a revolution and canceled the order, Mercedes had to sell this vehicle to other countries' militaries and launch a civilian version of the G-Wagen in the civilian market. Thus, to this day, the Mercedes G-Class remains a military and civilian vehicle series. If you have the means and don't lack money, you can also purchase a military Mercedes G-Class that has been converted for civilian use to experience the true G-Wagen heritage.

The first generation G-Wagen with chassis code W460 was discontinued in 1991, replaced by the W461 model, which was a special-purpose vehicle for military and government institutions for the G-Wagen series.

Almost simultaneously with the new military G-Wagen, Mercedes introduced the W463 model for the civilian market, which was the true civilian version of the G-Wagen. While maintaining off-road performance, the W463 model added more comfort and luxury elements such as leather trim, wood accents, power windows, ABS system, airbags, full-time four-wheel drive system, and front, center, and rear differential locks. Thus, the familiar G-Class took shape.

In 1994, Mercedes stopped using the G-Wagen name and replaced it with G-Class, which continues to this day.

In 1999, the Mercedes G55 AMG was officially launched, marking the beginning of speed being associated with the Mercedes G-Class, with this model being equipped with a 5.5L V8 supercharged engine producing a maximum power of 354 horsepower.

Subsequently, in 2012, Mercedes even introduced the G65 AMG version equipped with a V12 twin-turbocharged engine producing a maximum power of 612 horsepower, with the large boxy model achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.3 seconds.

In 2018, after nearly 39 years, the Mercedes G-Class finally underwent a major change with the introduction of the new generation G-Class family with the chassis code W464 to replace the long-standing W463 model.

Thus, the Mercedes G-Class entered a new era, including the 2024 model and the recently launched 2025 model, both of which are variants of the W464.

Although legends do not require major changes, whether compared to the original G-Wagen from 1979 or the previous generation G-Class, this generation of the Mercedes G-Class has made numerous optimizations at the detail level. For example, the three-bar grille now looks more refined, the round headlights have integrated LED daytime running lights, the interior lights have been redesigned, the taillights now feature a U-shaped LED light strip, and the front bumper has undergone slight modifications.

The most significant changes are actually in the interior, with the new Mercedes G-Class featuring a more technological and luxurious design, with a full LCD instrument cluster and a central multimedia screen adopting a connected design, and the gearshift mechanism changing to a wand-type.

Additionally, the air vent design of the W464 Mercedes G-Class can be described as groundbreaking, as it has been adopted in the air vents of many Mercedes models.

A more obvious yet subtle change is the increase in size of this generation of the Mercedes G-Class, with a 40mm longer wheelbase and a 15cm increase in longitudinal seating space in the rear, significantly improving the comfort of the rear seats.

Maybach, AMG, and the G-Class are all vehicles that speak louder through their actions than through words, making it difficult to describe them in language. But when they appear, the information bypasses language and goes straight to the brain, just like the G-Class is born simple and pure. It doesn't need to maneuver through the changing times; it only needs to make slight adjustments to maintain its image consistency.

So we can also understand the many unreasonable aspects of the Mercedes G-Class, such as not undergoing a real change for 39 years, maintaining almost the same design for 45 years, disregarding wind resistance, preserving mechanical structures, and simply being itself.

### Electric G-Class, The Greatest Change in the Legend

The playful word game in the title finds its echo here with the unexpected appearance of the zero-emission Electric G-Class. Mercedes' investment in the EQ series cannot be considered small, but going electric with the G-Class shows some of their determination.

Compared to the many unreasonable aspects of the fuel-powered Mercedes G-Class, the Electric G-Class is even more unique.

If the combination of the Mercedes G-Class and AMG is like a brute force, lacking finesse but full of power, then the Electric G-Class completely abandons the logic of most electric vehicles, including Mercedes' own EQ series.

Many people criticize the Mercedes EQ series, especially the design of the sedans, but the Mercedes designers must have felt bitter, telling themselves, "Isn't it all about reducing wind resistance, energy consumption, and improving range?"

But the Electric G-Class doesn't bother with the self-cultivation that electric vehicles should have; it remains square, with a huge frontal area, weighing over 3 tons, stepping into every obstacle that electric vehicles should avoid.

But the Mercedes G-Class comes with its own sense of reason and a willful exemption.

When you buy a Mercedes G-Class, no one is thinking about saving fuel, so when buying the Electric G-Class, no one is concerned about calculating electricity consumption meticulously. Instead of focusing on the kilometers per kilowatt-hour and the range reached by standard electric vehicles, the Electric G-Class is more concerned with becoming a true Mercedes G-Class.

Thus, the Electric G-Class's unreasonable genes stem from the Mercedes G-Class. In terms of appearance, the Electric G-Class has a high degree of similarity to the fuel-powered Mercedes G-Class, with the main exterior difference being the black panel radiator grille surrounded by illuminated LED strips (or the more traditional four-bar grille on the front), which displays an electric dynamic effect when unlocking and locking the vehicle.

Moreover, the Electric G-Class's hood slightly bulges, the A-pillar and roof spoilers have undergone aerodynamic optimization, there are options for closed-type low-drag wheel rims, and Mercedes has done some work to reduce wind resistance.

The rear of the Electric G-Class still features side-opening doors, with the main difference being that the spare tire location is no longer circular but similar to a rounded rectangular tool storage box, which can store charging cables and on-board tools.

Aside from that, many of the classic design elements of the Mercedes G-Class have been retained, such as the round headlights, the trapezoidal turn signals on the hood, and the iconic "bullet loading" closing sound, all of which indicate that this is an electric vehicle flowing with G-Class heritage.

With a 122-degree battery, this over 3-ton square box can achieve a range of 570km on the CLTC test, much better than many people would expect, just like the V8 engine in the fuel-powered Mercedes G-Class delivers power, the 570km range is also driven by a large battery pack.

As an electric vehicle with four motors capable of independent drive on all four wheels, the Electric G-Class can perform a similar operation to a "tank turn," replacing the classic three differential locks with G-STEERING (round dial turning) and G-TURN (similar to tank turn) buttons.

However, the addition of "electric" marks the biggest change in the history of the G-Class.

Of course, the price remains unchanged; the Mercedes Electric G580 has a pre-sale price of 2.17 million yuan.

### Square Box, Art Car, Fashion Week, The G-Class Is More Than Just a Car

This time, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Off-Roader Night event was held during Shanghai Fashion Week, in collaboration with Shanghai Fashion Week.

The inspiration for this week's fashion show was drawn from contemporary artist James Turrell's unique style, with the visual atmosphere of intersecting light and color uniting fashion and automotive elements in the runway.

In addition, the G-Class off-road art car created by renowned Chinese fashion designer Chen Peng in collaboration with Mercedes made its debut in the art exhibition area at the "Peak Creating G" event night, highlighting the G-Class's association with the art and fashion industries.

The G-Class off-road art piece entitled "Shi Po Tian Qing" was inspired by Chen Peng's hometown of Jingdezhen, China, using 45,000 pieces of blue and white porcelain shards polished to depict roses embedded on the vehicle body, symbolizing flowers blooming in the wilderness, merging hardness with softness, and enhancing the classic meaning.

Apart from the "Shi Po Tian Qing" G-Class off-road art piece, the PROJECT MONDO G art car created by Mercedes-Benz in collaboration with Moncler will also be exhibited at Shanghai's Xintiandi Fashion Square during Fashion Week.

The legendary Mercedes G-Class is not only about the various models that can be cherished over the 45 years, but also about the art cars that are purely for visual enjoyment, sufficient to illustrate the temperament of the Mercedes G-Class.

In 2018, when the Mercedes G-Class W464 was unveiled at the auto show, Mercedes encapsulated a 1979 G-Wagen inside a huge amber, as if it were a specimen of a car traversing endless time.

The amber imagery was inspired by the movie "Jurassic Park," where scientists managed to extract dinosaur blood from a mosquito trapped in amber, allowing them to extract genetic material and ultimately resurrect dinosaurs. By preserving the original G-Wagen in amber, it symbolized its wild nature and genetic heritage.

In 2020, Mercedes teamed up with renowned fashion and art figure Virgil Abloh to combine the G-Class off-road vehicle's original design concept with racing elements, creating a unique Project Geländewagen art concept car.

This was a sensation in both the fashion and automotive circles, as the sleek and smooth body of the car softened the ruggedness of the Mercedes G-Class, with many elements from Virgil Abloh and his then-main brand OFFWHITE adding a touch of avant-garde fashion to the Mercedes G-Class.

Therefore, the Mercedes G-Class is once again fashionable, radical, and free-spirited.

Just like how the launch event of the Mercedes G-Class was held during Shanghai Fashion Week. The Mercedes G-Class, with its inherent reasonableness, exerts a reality-distorting force field that accommodates all types of changes and constants, exaggerations, traditions, trends, and more descriptive terms.

Because the Mercedes G-Class itself is simple.
