On the evening of October 10th at 7 PM Beijing time, the Swedish Academy announced that the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature would be awarded to Korean writer Han Kang for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.

Following former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung's Nobel Peace Prize win in 2000, Han Kang became the second Korean to receive a Nobel Prize. She is also the first Asian female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, creating a historical milestone.

Despite jokes about Haruki Murakami's Nobel odds this year and Chinese writer Can Xue leading the betting odds, along with other popular candidates, Han Kang's win was unexpected by many. However, since winning the Booker Prize in 2016 with "The Vegetarian," beating prominent authors like Orhan Pamuk and Kenzaburo Oe, Han Kang has become an influential figure in the literary world and her Nobel win was seen as inevitable.

Further Reading: The Booker Prize, established in 2005, is considered one of the most important literary awards in the English-speaking world (other global literary awards include France's Prix Goncourt and the Kafka Prize in Czech Republic).

Han Kang's Booker Prize win was also the first in Korean history. No Chinese writer has won the Booker Prize.

Born on November 27, 1970, in Gwangju, South Korea, Han Kang comes from a family of writers. After graduating from Yonsei University's Korean Literature department in 1993, she began writing poetry and fiction. In 2005, Han Kang won the Yi Sang Literary Award with "Mongol Spots" (later changed to "The Vegetarian") at the young age of 35.

Further Reading: The Yi Sang Literary Award is named after writer Yi Sang and was established in 1977, making it one of Korea's most significant literary awards.

Interestingly, Han Kang's father, Han Sung-yong, also won the same award in 1988. In an interview, he mentioned that he had never taught his daughter to write fiction. Han Kang, indeed, carved her own path and style, surpassing her father's influence.

Reflection on history and the expression of human suffering (especially from a female perspective) have always been significant in Korean literature, and Han Kang excels in this genre. Her works are emotional, skillfully written, and rich in metaphorical and poetic descriptions- perhaps influenced by her background in poetry.

Her works are also quite "international," making them more reader-friendly for translators and readers outside Korea. English translator Deborah Smith has noted this - "The Vegetarian," which won the Booker Prize, was translated by Smith (the Booker Prize now rewards both the author and the English translator since 2016, with both splitting the prize money), assisting in the wider dissemination of her works.

Although Han Kang is not a bestselling author, she is perhaps one of the most-translated Nobel laureates in recent years in China. Following the Nobel Prize announcement, many e-commerce platforms started promoting her as a "Nobel laureate," making it easy for new readers to discover her works without delay.

We have compiled a list of several books available in China (listed by their publication dates in Korea), which readers can now explore:

"The Deer and Others"

Published: 1998

Han Kang's early work, also her first novel, was published in China by Jilin Publishing Group in July 2013 as part of the "New Classic Series" (which includes other titles like Jin Yan-su's "At the World's End, My Girlfriend" and Lee Rin-seong's "Toward Strange Times").

"The Deer and Others" showcases Han Kang's characteristic style with multiple character perspectives, social themes, whimsical metaphors, and the portrayal of yearning for light in the darkness (both symbolically with the deer and the lower classes). These themes laid the foundation for her future works.

"The Vegetarian"

Published: 2007

One of Han Kang's most influential works, also a Booker Prize winner (traditionally awarded for an author's lifetime achievements, "The Vegetarian" was the first standalone book to win the award). Initially published in Korea in 2007, it was introduced in China by Sichuan Literature and Art Publishing House in September 2021.

This book consists of three parts - "The Vegetarian," "Mongolian Mark (later changed to 'The Fruit of My Woman')," and "The Flaming Tree" - a series of novellas that portray the story of "Yeong-hye" and her decision to become a vegetarian. It reflects the female protagonist's resistance against South Korea's traditional conservatism as she explores the madness and scars within.

This work has received widespread international acclaim, translated into multiple languages and sold in over 40 countries and regions.

"The Feral"

Published: 2011

Titled "The Feral Time" or "Greek Lessons" in the original, published in Korea in 2011, this book was introduced in China by Jiu Zhou Publishing House in October 2023.

"The Feral" tells the story of a mute woman who loses her mother, gets divorced, and loses custody of her child, and a man on the verge of losing his sight and teaching Greek. The two characters, isolated from the world, combined with Han Kang's deliberately fragmented sentences and structure, offer readers a unique yet melancholic reading experience.

"Dinner in a Drawer"

Published: 2013

This is Han Kang's collection of poems - even though she actually started her career as a poet, "Dinner in a Drawer" remains her only poetry collection yet. It includes 60 poems she wrote over 20 years. Published in Korea in 2013, it was introduced in China by Jiu Zhou Publishing House in January of this year.

Like Han Kang's novels, her poetry is emotionally charged and filled with sensory imagery, but this has made her poetry contentious, with polarized reader opinions. Readers are welcome to experience and form their own views.

"White"

Published: 2016

Published in 2016, introduced into China in September 2022 by Sichuan Literature and Art Publishing House, this book delves into Poland's historical trauma during World War II. Through a study of 63 white-related elements and symbols, Han Kang explores topics like life, death, and memory.

Furthermore, this book continues Han Kang's beautiful writing style - even to the extent of blurring the boundaries between novel and prose with overly stream-of-consciousness and emotional descriptions, which has led to mixed reviews and some reading thresholds.
