In the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania, a villa spans the waterfall of Bear Run.
▲ Source: Fallingwater
The architectural structure, with its square geometric shape, blends seamlessly into the deep mountain ravine, resembling a creation of the forest, making it difficult to discern whether the villa complements the mountain and water, or if the villa is adorned with mountain and water.
This is the classic work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, "Fallingwater," not only hailed as the "greatest work in American architectural history" by the American Institute of Architects, but also designated as a World Heritage Site in 2019.
This is also a representative work of Wright's "organic architecture" concept: a miraculous balance between architecture and nature, where both are integrated and every element in the architecture and environment is interrelated, creating a natural harmony and lifelike feel.
Ninety years after the completion of Fallingwater, thousands of miles away in China, OPPO, a technology company, released the new ColorOS 15 system.
While architecture and smartphones seem worlds apart, upon experiencing ColorOS 15, I discovered that their design philosophies are interconnected – seeking a natural vitality beneath the advanced technology.
Easy and Simple Design: Modern Aesthetics Full of Vitality
The concept of "Easy and Simple Design" in ColorOS 15 seems simple and straightforward at first glance – just a simple and minimalist design language, right? What's so special about it?
But upon using this "new" system, it's difficult to notice any changes in the UI.
This is the brilliance of "Easy and Simple Design," and also OPPO's design philosophy: not to seek revolutionary design iterations at the visual level, but to make more precise adjustments to ultimately serve the core user experience.
This can be seen in the system icons of ColorOS 15.
The default application and system icons, from the previous geometric abstractions, have evolved into a more metaphorical pattern design, maintaining the basic features but adding many details.
Not only the icons but the overall space and color texture of the system have been "redecorated." For example, the new real-time color blending in the notification center and control center, with a frosted glass texture, and the diffused projection brings natural light effects into controls, cards, and pop-ups.

When it comes to ColorOS 15, OPPO uses a word – "vitality."
But what exactly is vitality? The smartphone system is clearly an "inanimate" object, so how can it reflect vitality?
Vitality is reflected in the natural animations, providing users with a sense of "breath;" vitality is reflected in intuitive feedback, making users feel that the system is consciously responding to them; vitality is also reflected in rich and restrained design where color and light layers provide users with visual enjoyment – and the more intrinsic vitality lies in the system's intelligent ability, reducing the user's operational burden.
It is well known that AI will be the biggest new variable on smartphones, and therefore, all smartphone manufacturers are faced with a challenge –
How to integrate AI into the system?
Just as Wright stood on Laurel Highlands, contemplating how to construct a modern aesthetically pleasing villa among the forests and streams of Bear Run.
Wright's answer was Fallingwater, allowing the breeze and water flow to become part of the man-made architecture.
In the same way, system updates should be a natural process, and OPPO's answer is to start from humanism – prioritizing user experience and hiding technical edges.
Whether on any interface, long-pressing the power button or system navigation bar, the newly upgraded Xiao Bu AI assistant comes to the rescue, visually appearing as a colorful ripple flowing across the entire screen.
The interaction is seamless: once Xiao Bu pops up at the bottom of the screen, users can directly ask questions or view the camera viewfinder content, and if needed, select the main subject with a single click.
This design aligns with the metaphorical real design philosophy of "Easy and Simple Design," where AI, like flowing water, permeates into every aspect of the phone, giving the phone more vitality.
Breathing AI: Alive and Intelligent
As a building, the layout design and building materials inside are the core elements that create the experiential feel.
Fallingwater's building materials not only include local wood and stone, but the furnishings intentionally maintain the texture of natural materials, and the house layout is clever: the mountain stream flows in the courtyard, natural light moves through the rooms, and the mountain rocks are exposed inside – the natural vitality of the outdoors has entered the villa.
Back to the smartphone, with Easy and Simple design and upgraded motion effects decorating the facade, the inner vitality of ColorOS 15 comes from the newly upgraded system-level AI.
Individual AI applications on the phone, like isolated islands at sea, require users to use them in their standalone application form, obtaining answers from the cloud, with understanding user intent and context often being hit or miss.
However, the newly upgraded Super Xiao Bu maneuvers like the flowing light within Fallingwater, effortlessly traversing the system.
By long-pressing the power button or navigation bar, users can activate Super Xiao Bu in any scenario, not as a quick teleportation door to the intelligent assistant, but as a summoning technique within the scene.
With powerful screen recognition capabilities, Xiao Bu can truly see what the user sees, understand the content on the screen, and better comprehend the user's intentions.
For example, while browsing Red Book, I came across some beautiful pictures from the Changbai Mountain Scenic Area.
At this point, I summoned Xiao Bu to further elaborate on "this location," and Xiao Bu not only recognized that I was referring to Changbai Mountain but quickly gathered basic information to present.
Xiao Bu understood that Changbai Mountain was indeed a good place, perfect for autumn visits. So, I asked Xiao Bu to customize a travel route, which not only listed the names of the attractions but directly marked them on a third-party map app.
I then asked for a personalized travel guide, and Xiao Bu quickly generated a detailed textual guide, providing two different travel routes, transportation recommendations, and updated location markers.
With the camera, Xiao Bu successfully "sees the world," transitioning from the phone screen to the real world, recognizing real-world objects, learning to translate foreign languages, and sharing product information skills, making it easier to read foreign-language magazines with a high level of accuracy.
We can input all forms of content into the phone, such as text, voice, images, etc., and Xiao Bu comprehends all, responds to various situations, and interacts with users in an intuitive way, aligning perfectly with human intuition.
This subtly elevates the upper limit of Xiao Bu's capabilities, as it is now capable of emulating human interaction with the phone.
When I instructed Xiao Bu to send the latest picture to someone, it executed the task just like a human, opening WeChat, entering the username in the search bar, finding the most relevant contact, and automatically sending the first picture from the album.
While this function is not perfect, it showcases the potential of comprehensive AI operations, efficiently managing all applications, adapting to all scenarios, and making me feel the thriving vitality of AI Xiao Bu.
In addition to this centralized intelligent understanding and integrated interaction, ColorOS 15 also empowers various system applications with AI, not to disrupt the user's daily habits, but to seamlessly integrate into the original functions like flowing water.
Productivity-wise, AI is comfortable in its zone, with ColorOS 15 supporting voice-to-text and summarization, not only converting audio in official recording apps but also intelligently transcribing in scenarios like WeChat calls or Tencent meetings, displaying subtitles in Chinese and English, and saving text records and summaries post-meeting.
In addition to calls and recordings, conversations-rich videos or audios like online seminars, podcasts, or interview videos can use "Intelligent Voice" to generate subtitles and summaries.
AI is also integrated into the new "Documents" app in ColorOS 15, where opening a file allows the AI Document Assistant to provide document summaries, translations, continuations, and refinements. After using this feature to intelligently summarize an English document, the AI not only summarized it in Chinese but also provided page references below each key point.
