英文版:
In September this year, Starbucks launched "Yunnan Coffee Beans," with two carefully selected beans from the Zuoyuan Farm in Baoshan, and the return of the Yunnan Coffee Beans from a single origin that was first introduced in 2017.
Over the years, the quality of Starbucks Yunnan coffee has been getting better every year, and it has become one of the most anticipated new products each year. The three new beans launched this year have received enthusiastic attention and positive tasting reviews, with the carefully selected beans quickly selling out, a testament to their quality.
In fact, despite being one of the few regions globally suitable for coffee cultivation, Yunnan's coffee industry has undergone a complete growth process from nothing to what it is today. From early rudimentary operation to modernization and Starbucks producing the highest quality carefully selected beans. In just over a decade, Yunnan coffee has undergone significant transformative changes.
Behind this change lies the continuous investment and nurturing by enterprises like Starbucks over the years. This has not only brought business to the coffee farmers but has also introduced advanced equipment, production experiences, skills training, digital agriculture, and strict product standards. This has directly promoted local industrial upgrading and has become an essential part of community development and rural revitalization.
In September 2018, our trip took us to the Yunnan coffee producing area, and after 6 years - also at the 12th year of Starbucks' deep cultivation in Yunnan, we once again visited Yunnan to see how a coffee bean is born in Yunnan, what new developments are happening with Yunnan beans, and what new changes are occurring in the Yunnan production area.
At the "Martial Arts Conference" site, we witnessed a new milestone for Starbucks Yunnan Coffee
Our trip to Yunnan lasted for over three days, and one of the significant events was the "Starbucks Yunnan Coffee Outstanding Supplier Conference" held at the Pu'er Grand Theater on October 19th.
This conference was born in 2015, and this year marks the 6th edition (interrupted in the middle due to the pandemic, and now returning this year). Each session gathers coffee farmers from different parts of Yunnan, many of whom have their unique specialties and skills (such as beans with different flavors). The interactive process amongst them resembles a martial arts competition, hence the conference being nicknamed the "Martial Arts Conference."
This year, more than 1500 coffee farmers from various Yunnan producing areas gathered at the "Martial Arts Conference" in Puer, with Starbucks Global Executive Vice President and Starbucks China CEO, Jane Lu, and Starbucks Global Coffee and Sustainable Development Executive Vice President Michelle Burns in attendance to present awards. The dedication and scale of Starbucks were evident at the event.
As the only coffee industry awards ceremony for Yunnan coffee farmers, this year's conference expressed gratitude for the hard work of farmers. Starbucks awarded over 40 farmers in categories such as delivery quantity, delivery pass rate, and yield rate. Five farmers were selected for the "Starbucks Reserve Hall of Fame," as their beans were chosen for Starbucks Reserve.
The setting of awards and prizes was down-to-earth and practical, filled with laughter and joy at the site. The farmers' smiles were especially contagious, highlighting their honest dedication to coffee. Everyone came for the love of coffee, with each person being sincere. The "star coffee farmers" were surrounded by others seeking to learn, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.
From farms, estates to the planting support center, the birth of a Yunnan bean entails numerous efforts and sweat
This signifies that we will have more opportunities to enjoy Yunnan coffee in various ways. This journey was not easy. In 2012, Starbucks officially established the first Asia Pacific Coffee Planter Support Center (FSC) in Puer, which initiated the comprehensive advancement of the Yunnan coffee producing region. It took a full 12 years to achieve the success seen today.
Behind this success is Starbucks' continuous investment and the hard work of coffee farmers. From planting, growth, to harvesting, with Starbucks Coffee Planter Support Center conducting inspections, rough processing, cup testing, continuous feedback adjustments, planting training, and more, the birth of a Yunnan bean requires numerous efforts and sweat.
During our Yunnan trip, we visited two coffee farms and the Starbucks Coffee Planter Support Center. One of them was the Qing Kai Farm, situated at an altitude of 1200 meters. The farm owner, Cai Qingkai, shared his coffee journey and planting stories with us.
In the past, Cai Qingkai was just a coffee-loving truck driver who, in 2006, invested everything he had to start his coffee planting journey. Although he had a small harvest in 2009, it resulted in losses. With the help of the Starbucks Coffee Planter Support Center in 2012, Cai Qingkai became one of the first farmers to benefit from the center. Over the past 12 years, Cai Qingkai has developed a close relationship with Starbucks' agriculturalists, feeling like family to them.
The Qing Kai Farm has also entered the phase of modern and smart agriculture. During our visit, Cai Qingkai introduced us to the drying methods used at the farm, which solved the issue of mold during the harvest season overlapping with the rainy season. Additionally, the farm used a water-saving coffee bean processing method that reduces water usage by 80% compared to traditional water-washing methods.
Looking ahead, Cai Qingkai is full of dreams for the Qing Kai Farm. He hopes that in the future, the farm can not only focus on planting but also drive more farmers to establish cooperatives and develop various local businesses. This vision aims to ensure more people can visit coffee producing regions, be close to nature, and experience life in a coffee field.
We also visited the Xin Rui Coffee Estate, which, like the Qing Kai Farm, is a Starbucks demonstration farm.
The estate owner, Xiao Pu, and Starbucks Yunnan Coffee Planter Support Center agriculturalist, Wang Wandong, took us deep into the coffee fields. They shared the work they had done, including standard planting spacing, shading trees, preventing soil erosion, preventing and treating coffee rust disease, using biological agents to combat coffee borer pests without harming the plants. From pruning directions to post-frost coffee seedling regeneration, the support and training provided by the Starbucks Yunnan Coffee Planter Support Center are evident.
When these modern and refined planting technologies are showcased, the experience in the fields is entirely different. The ongoing daily support and the dedication of locals have instilled confidence in planting good coffee. Over the years, the relationship between farmers and agriculturalists has undoubtedly deepened.
Apart from the farmers' perspective, at the Starbucks Yunnan Coffee Planter Support Center, we gained insight into the overall development of Yunnan coffee over the past 12 years from Starbucks' viewpoint.
For the past 12 years, the Starbucks Yunnan Coffee Planter Support Center has continuously provided free and professional sustainable planting training to farmers, regardless of whether the coffee beans are eventually sold to Starbucks. Agriculturalists conduct extensive field visits to understand and address farmers' practical issues, establish scientific rough coffee processing steps, provide support to farmers to ensure their coffee beans meet Starbucks' "Coffee and Planter Fair Standard"...
At the harvest stage, Starbucks' "Quality and Price" policy rewards farmers for higher quality coffee beans, above market average prices by 20% - 30%, encouraging the cultivation of high-quality coffee and changing industry perceptions. Yunnan coffee was previously purchased at a fixed price; Starbucks has driven a shift in the industry mindset.
The data reflects remarkable achievements: Over the past 12 years, the Starbucks Yunnan Coffee Planter Support Center has trained over 36,800 farmers, certified 3,411 farms with the "Coffee and Planter Fair Standard," totaling 352,465 acres. They have purchased over 65,000 tons of high-quality Yunnan coffee (as of September this year). Quality acceptance rates have increased from 20% in 2012 to 80% currently. As a result, more farmers are living better lives, and Yunnan beans have made it into Starbucks' most-used espresso beans, marking long-term sales in all national stores.
The journey of a single coffee bean from the field to the Starbucks store has been completed, but the story of Yunnan coffee continues.
